In 1998 the Commission authorized SMU to be one of the pilot institutions qualified for trial-run of domestic MBA program. In the Commission-organized educational assessment of China's existing MBA programs in 2001, SMU's programs were favorably appraised and it thus was listed as one of the accredited institutions for running the MBA program regularly. In 2002 the Commission further authorized SMU to be one of the 30 China's universities qualified to run EMBA programs.

Drawing on SMUSEM's existing academic strengths, SMU's MBA program is increasingly gaining recognition among the nation's MBA educations experts and business community.
