The School of Law of Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) features the teaching and research in maritime law, with a group of professors and research personnel influential in the shipping and insurance industries. Many teachers of the School of Law hold attorney’s certificates and are active in legal practice, which brings the teaching and practice closely integrated. The School of Law has abundant teaching staff including over 20 professors and associate professors, with nearly 450 postgraduates and over 600 undergraduates studying on campus.
 
The School of Law is running three programs in master degree, namely International Law, Civil & Commercial Law, and Economic Law.
 
Maritime law in SMU is one of leading specialties. In 2000, the maritime law was included into Shanghai Key Specialties. In 2005, the maritime law was included into Education Height Construction Specialties, and since 2007, the Institute of Maritime Law (affiliated to the School of Law) has been one of Key discipline for Humanities and Social Sciences, both approved and supported by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. The School of Law initiatively takes part in research and academic activities on admiralty and maritime law at home and abroad, Keeping its teaching and research in line with the world level. Teachers from the School of Law have directly in legislation of and amendments to the laws reffering to maritime affairs, as well as actively get involved in the dispute settlement in shipping, marine insurance and maritime judicial fields, with remarkable achievements.

This specialty aims to cultivate senior legal talent that possesses theoretical and practical knowledge of international maritime law, and can manage the international maritime and admiralty, and foreign-related economic laws and affairs.

Orientation of Employment: the graduates are mainly engaged in legal or business affairs at maritime courts, law offices, foreign trade companies and shipping companies as well as other shipping agencies, foreign trade transportation companies and insurance companies.
